The rapid expansion of data centers in North Texas is creating a pressing need for skilled electricians and HVAC technicians. With at least 248 data centers planned across Texas, 86 of which are in North Texas, the region is experiencing a workforce shortage that is struggling to keep pace with the rising demand for these trades.
According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Dallas, Tarrant, and North Central workforce regions will require nearly 3,000 additional electricians by 2032, marking a 15% increase over staffing levels in 2026. In the Dallas region alone, there are projected to be approximately 1,035 electrician openings each year, driven primarily by retirements and normal turnover as the workforce ages.
The competition for skilled labor is not limited to Texas. Nationally, the construction labor shortfall for data centers could reach as high as 499,000 workers. As a result, wages for electricians and HVAC specialists on data-center projects have increased, often exceeding those in traditional construction roles. This trend has made electrical and HVAC work some of the most sought-after careers in the region, particularly for young North Texans considering their future options, as trade programs allow for earning while training without the burden of student debt.
