Alvarez’s Late Blast Caps Comeback Attempt

Tampa Bay’s rally fell just short on Saturday as the Houston Astros held on for a 10-8 victory at Daikin Park. Despite a furious late-inning surge that tied the game and briefly gave the Rays the lead, a two-run home run by Alvarez in the ninth inning sealed the win for Houston.

The game featured six home runs in total, with Alvarez providing the decisive blow. His 424-foot shot to center field in the final frame broke an 8-8 tie, pushing the Astros ahead for good. Alvarez had already been a factor earlier in the day, hitting a two-run homer in the first inning and adding a single in the fifth that scored Allen.

Rays’ Early Power Fades

Tampa Bay jumped out to an early 3-1 lead behind a strong offensive showing in the first two innings. Wander Franco’s teammate, Caminero, opened the scoring with a 437-foot homer to left-center in the top of the first. Alvarez followed with a 403-foot blast to left-center in the same inning, driving in Altuve to give the Rays a 3-1 lead.

The Rays extended their advantage in the second inning when Palacios homered to right-center, scoring Mesa Jr. to make it 5-2. However, the Astros began to chip away at the lead. In the third, Mesa Jr. hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Aranda, and DeLuca’s single brought Caminero home. A wild sequence saw Mullins steal home twice, though the second instance appears to be a duplicate entry in the box score; the run count reflects one additional run, making it 6-2.

Houston’s offense continued to apply pressure. In the fourth, Walls scored on an error, and Diaz followed with a 394-foot homer to right-center, scoring Walker to cut the deficit to 6-4. The Astros tied the game in the seventh inning when DeLuca homered to left. Alvarez and Paredes added sacrifice flies and singles to tie the score at 8-8, setting the stage for the dramatic finish.

Pitching Struggles Define the Game

Both bullpens were tested, but Tampa Bay’s relievers could not hold the lead. Drew Rasmussen started for the Rays, pitching five innings and allowing five earned runs on six hits. He was joined by Cole Sulser, Garrett Cleavinger, Craig Kimbrel, and Casey Legumina. Legumina took the loss after giving up two earned runs in his brief appearance.

For Houston, Hunter Brown started and gave up six earned runs in four innings. Nate Pearson, Cristian Javier, Bryan King, and Josh Hader provided relief. Hader earned the win, pitching a perfect inning with one strikeout. Javier struck out four batters in two innings, while King and Pearson each pitched a scoreless frame.

Final Numbers and Records

The game drew an attendance of 37,457 at Daikin Park. With the loss, the Tampa Bay Rays fall to 52-34 on the season. The Houston Astros improve to 44-47. The six home runs tied for the most in a game this season, highlighting the offensive firepower on display. No team advances or is eliminated based on this result.
