Houston's Pitching Struggles Define Loss

The Houston Astros found themselves in a deep hole early and never quite recovered, falling 8-2 to the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park on Wednesday. The defeat drops the Astros to 46-49 on the season, while the Nationals improve to 48-46.

Houston starter Spencer Arrighetti faced a difficult outing from the outset. He pitched four innings, allowing seven hits and eight earned runs while walking six batters. He struck out two before being pulled from the game. The damage accumulated quickly, as Washington’s offense capitalized on Arrighetti’s struggles to build an insurmountable lead. Arrighetti’s record fell to 7-5 following the loss.

Washington’s Offensive Explosion

The Nationals’ bats were led by CJ Abrams and Luis García Jr., both of whom contributed significantly to the scoring. García Jr. provided a massive boost in the fourth inning with a home run to right-center field, measuring 417 feet. That blast drove in two runs, turning a 0-2 deficit into a 0-5 advantage for Washington.

Abrams also went deep, launching a 415-foot home run to right-center in the fifth inning. His homer extended the lead to 1-6. The Nationals added more runs in the same frame, capitalizing on Houston’s defensive lapses. A throwing error by shortstop Abrams on a play involving Allen allowed another run to cross the plate. Washington continued to pile on, with Ruiz hitting a sacrifice fly to center field to score another run, making it 1-8.

Astros Attempt Late Comeback

Houston managed to get on the board in the fifth inning when Matthews singled to center field, driving in Diaz to make it 1-5. However, the Astros could not sustain any momentum. In the eighth inning, Allen reached on an infield single to shortstop, and Dezenzo scored on a throwing error by shortstop Abrams. Allen advanced to second, but the single run was insufficient to change the outcome.

Relief Pitching and Final Stats

After Arrighetti’s exit, Alimber Santa pitched two innings for Houston, allowing one hit and no earned runs. Nate Pearson and Cristian Javier each pitched one inning, with Pearson striking out one batter and Javier walking two. None of the relievers were able to stop the bleeding completely, though they prevented further damage.

For Washington, Foster Griffin earned the win, pitching seven innings and allowing only one earned run on five hits. He struck out nine batters and walked none, improving his record to 10-2. Orlando Ribalta and Justin Lawrence each pitched one inning to close out the game, securing the victory for the Nationals.

The final score of 8-2 reflected Washington’s dominance throughout the game. The Nationals’ offense was too much for Houston’s pitching staff to handle, despite some late defensive errors. The game drew an attendance of 17,760 at Nationals Park.
