Rita Rae, an 81-year-old Plano resident, has concluded a lengthy conflict with city officials over property code violations by selling her home of 54 years. The dispute, which began in June 2024, involved allegations of health and safety hazards, including structural damage, plumbing failures, and pest concerns. City officials stated they needed to address these issues, while Rae described the process as harassment that she could not afford to resolve given her fixed income.
The situation escalated when police executed a search warrant at her residence, discovering water damage and mold. Rae’s attorney, Andy Trusevich, intervened pro bono after her medical transport driver shared her plight on a neighborhood app. Trusevich argued that criminal charges were unwarranted and criticized the city’s approach. With assistance from Trusevich and other volunteers, Rae sold the property and moved into an active senior living community where maintenance is covered.
Plano officials noted that such cases are common and that they cannot force residents to utilize available assistance programs. Rae, who asked that her last name be withheld, expressed relief at leaving the stress behind. Her birthday on June 23 marked her first celebration in her new residence since her husband's passing, though details regarding his death are not yet clear.
