As the new school year approaches, Plano shoppers can take advantage of Texas' annual tax-free weekend. This sales tax holiday is scheduled from August 7 through August 9, 2026, allowing residents to save on essential back-to-school items.

During this weekend, many items will be exempt from state and local sales tax, which can reach up to 8.25 percent. Eligible products include most clothing and footwear priced under $100 per item, student backpacks (up to 10 per purchase), and a specific list of school supplies under $100 each. The exemption applies for purchases made in Texas stores or online from Texas-based sellers.

However, certain items, such as jewelry, handbags, watches, computers, and clothing designed for athletic or protective use, do not qualify. Additionally, services such as rentals and alterations are excluded from the tax exemption.

Shoppers will not need to present a coupon or exemption certificate, as the discount will be applied automatically at checkout for qualifying items. A complete list of eligible products can be found on the Texas Comptroller's website.
