Jamie Benn's tenure with the Dallas Stars will extend into an 18th season after the captain signed a one-year contract on Friday. The deal is worth $850,000 in base salary, with an additional $1.15 million available through performance bonuses.
The 36-year-old forward battled injuries last season but still contributed 36 points, scoring 15 goals with 21 assists in 60 games. He was held scoreless in six playoff contests as the Stars were eliminated in the first round by the Minnesota Wild.
Stars GM Jim Nill called Benn's leadership and commitment to the organization truly unmatched, noting that the captain has helped define the team's culture. Nill said the organization is excited to have him leading the squad for another campaign.
Benn, drafted by Dallas in the fifth round in 2007, has accumulated 992 points across 1,252 regular-season games. He ranks second in franchise history in games, goals, and points, trailing only Mike Modano, and is third in assists.
The Stars made the move after shedding salary by trading Mavrik Bourque and Ilya Lyubushkin to Nashville. The front office remains engaged in negotiations with Jason Robertson, who is reportedly seeking a multi-year deal worth between $12 and $14 million annually.
